Van Berkel Slicer: Historical Notes
The first manual Berkel slicer was created in 1898 from the ingenuity of Wilhelmus Adrianus van Berkel, a Dutch butcher with a passion for mechanics whose dream was to invent a device capable of mechanically reproducing the hand movement used when slicing with a knife. A machine designed to offer customers a butcher’s product of the highest quality, distinguished by slices that were uniform in size and thickness. More than 100 years after the launch of the first slicer Berkel flywheel machines – thanks to their bright colours and vintage lines – have become a true design icon, appreciated by professionals, architects and interior designers alike.
Berkel Slicers: All Models
All the Berkel slicer models available on our website are antique pieces, expertly and faithfully restored, meticulously detailed and rebuilt with artisanal precision and craftsmanship. Among the various models available is the famous Model B, also commonly known as the Indiana or “Indianina” model, as it was produced in the early 1920s at the Berkel factory in Indiana.
It is a floral flywheel Berkel with compact dimensions and a slender, well-proportioned design. It is one of the earliest models produced by the European company and, owing to its distinctive decorative detailing, stands among the most emblematic models of the industrial and aesthetic revolution of the early twentieth century.
In addition to the Model B, our website also features the B80 and B100 variants: historic Berkel models that differ from the Model B in subtle variations and identifying elements, such as the slice thickness adjustment system.
Alongside the floral flywheel models, our website also offers solid flywheel Berkel slicers. Thanks to their mechanical features and cutting capacity, these are among the most sought-after models. Among them, it is impossible not to mention the Berkel 115 slicer which, due to its advanced technical solutions, clearly stands apart from the company’s other models and is widely regarded as the finest flywheel slicer ever built.
All the historic slicers in this section are supplied without a pedestal, which can be viewed in the dedicated “Bases” category and purchased separately. Contact us for further information about our products and to discover how to add a Berkel with its unmistakably designed pedestal to your collection.
